Turn your notes into flashcards that make you answer first

Paste your notes. Get flashcards in seconds. You have to type an answer (or admit you don't know) before the card flips, because that effort is what makes it stick. Spaced repetition, shareable decks and Anki export, all free in your browser.

1. Make a deck

Works best with term - definition, term: definition or Q: / A: lines. Plain sentences become fill-the-gap cards (the gap is a name, number or key word).

Why answer before you flip?

Most flashcard apps let you look at the front, think "yeah, I know that", and flip. That feels like revision but mostly trains recognition. Making yourself produce an answer first, even a wrong one, is retrieval practice, one of the best-supported study techniques in learning research. So here the Reveal button stays greyed out until you've typed something.

How the spacing works

Each card sits in one of five boxes (the Leitner system). Got it moves a card up a box, Again sends it back to box 1. Box 1 comes back in the same session, then after 1, 3, 7 and 14 days. Only cards that are due are shown, so a 10-minute session each day beats a two-hour cram.

Share a deck with your class

Every deck has a share link. The whole deck is packed into the link itself, so nothing is uploaded anywhere. Whoever opens it gets their own copy and their own progress.

Use it with Anki or Quizlet

Export a tab-separated file. Anki imports it with File → Import, and Quizlet's import box accepts tab-separated text too.

Flashcards are the start. Want to talk it through? Ask Poppy is an AI tutor you talk or type to. It asks what you already know and gives one hint at a time instead of handing you the answer, and it remembers where you left off. Free for 30 messages a day; unlimited use is optional ($3.99/week or $9.99/month in the US store). Like any AI, it can make mistakes.

Free, 30 messages a day · iPhone, iPad and Mac. (Disclosure: this free tool is made by the Ask Poppy team.)

Questions

How do I make flashcards from my notes?

Paste notes with one fact per line, such as "term - definition", "term: definition" or Q: and A: lines. Plain sentences become fill-the-gap cards. Check the preview and start studying.

Why do I have to type an answer first?

Producing an answer, even a wrong one, is retrieval practice. Just looking at a card and flipping it mostly trains recognition, which feels like learning but fades faster.

Can I import these flashcards into Anki or Quizlet?

Yes. Export gives a tab-separated text file. Anki imports it with File, Import, and Quizlet accepts tab-separated text in its import box.

Where are my decks stored?

In this browser on this device. Share links contain the whole deck in the link itself, so nothing is uploaded.
